Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons broke ground Oct. 22 on an outpatient surgery center in Montgomery. Building starts in November; the center is due to open in spring 2028.

A Montgomery orthopedic practice has broken ground on an outpatient surgery center for joint replacements and other bone and joint operations.

Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons and its parent company, U.S. Orthopaedic Partners, held the groundbreaking Oct. 22. Construction is scheduled to begin in November. The center is expected to open in spring 2028.

The details are from the companies’ press release of Oct. 27.

What the center will have

The release says the building will include:

  • four fully equipped operating rooms
  • space for two more operating rooms later
  • two procedure rooms
  • robot-assisted equipment for joint replacements

It is an ambulatory surgery center. That means patients have surgery and go home the same day, without a hospital admission.

The release does not give the center’s address, its cost or how many people it will employ.

Why it took years

A new surgery center in Alabama needs a certificate of need from the state before it can be built. The company said getting one was “a demanding process.”

“Partnering with USOP provided SOS with the experienced leadership necessary to navigate the complicated process of attaining the Certificate of Need,” Dr. Stephen Samelson, an orthopedic surgeon with the practice and chair of the parent company’s board, said in the release.

The practice has served central Alabama since 1996, according to its own about page. It already runs clinics on Taylor Road in Montgomery and in Prattville, Tallassee and Wetumpka, according to its locations page.

Part of a wider build-out

U.S. Orthopaedic Partners supports 10 orthopedic practices across the Southeast. The release says it has two other surgery centers on the way:

Project Where Stage, per the release
Mid State Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center Alexandria, Louisiana due to open in November 2026
SportsMED surgery center Huntsville due to break ground later this year
Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons surgery center Montgomery broke ground Oct. 22; due to open spring 2028

What it means for you

  • Nothing changes for patients yet. The center will not take patients until spring 2028 at the earliest. Existing clinic appointments go ahead as normal.
  • More same-day surgery locally. Once open, it adds four operating rooms in Montgomery for procedures such as joint replacements that do not need a hospital stay.
  • Ask your insurer. Whether a procedure can be done at a surgery center instead of a hospital depends on your health and your plan.
  • Construction traffic. Building is due to start in November. We will add the site and any road effects when they are published.
