How the score works
Alabama uses a 100-point scale, with points taken off for each violation. The more serious “priority” and “priority foundation” violations count for more and are marked in red on the report. The overall score sets what happens next, according to ADPH:
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 85 to 100 | Satisfactory compliance; inspected on the routine schedule |
| 70 to 84 | Follow-up inspection within 60 days |
| 60 to 69 | Follow-up and reinspection within 48 hours |
| Below 60 | Closed immediately |
Whatever the overall score, priority violations must be corrected as soon as possible and within three days, and priority foundation violations within 10 days. Food found out of compliance is removed.
How often places are inspected
State law requires every place that sells food to hold a current permit from the county health department. Food service establishments are generally required to be inspected at least three times a year, depending on the food they prepare; the average convenience store may be inspected once a year, ADPH says. The latest inspection report and the permit must be posted in plain view.
Recent closings in Montgomery
ADPH publishes the food service closings it orders across the state. Actions at Montgomery addresses on its closings list on Oct. 17:
| Date | Establishment | Address | Reason given by ADPH |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 24 | Cuco’s Mexican Cafe | 72-D Dexter Ave. | Lack of adequate refrigeration |
| July 10 | Jan’s Beach House Grill | 850 Eastern Blvd. | Roach infestation |
The list covers the last 90 days. Operations may not resume until an inspection shows the hazard is gone, and ADPH says that in most cases conditions are corrected and the place can reopen within a few hours. To check a place’s current status, call the county Environmental Office.
Reading a report fairly
- A score reflects the conditions on the day of the inspection.
- Look at which items were marked in red, not just the number.
- Check the date: a follow-up inspection may already show the problems fixed.
